The families of the three Jews arrested for complicity in the death of Jan Grotowski, the Polish student killed as the aftermath to a drunken brawl, disclaim that the arrested are members of the underworld, as the official police communique after the arrest charged.
This statement is carried by the Jewish daily, “Morgen,” which yesterday interviewed the families. The paper states that all the members of the family its representatives have contacted are respectable and that one of the arrested has been married only recently.
In legal circles skepticism is expressed that the accused can be tried under martial law as the death of the student was not premeditated, but occurred in a clash with drunkards.
The American Jewish Congress has urged the Polish Ambassador to the United States to convey to the Polish Government the extreme anxiety of American Jews over the dangers to the lives and property of the Jews in Poland.
At the meeting of the Committee on Problems in Foreign Lands of the American Jewish Congress, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, who is Chairman of the Committee and the Honorary President of the Congress, and Bernard S. Deutsch, President, were instructed to dispatch a telegram to this effect to the Polish Ambassador of the United States.
