Two more prominent Jews of Havana were taken into custody by the police on charges of expressing opposition to the present government.
They are David Kurland, former editor of the Havana Yiddish publication “Dos Yidishe Welt” and prominent in the affairs of the Jewish community, and Jacob Segal, son of a leading Jewish merchant.
Kurland and Segal were handed over to the authority of the Military Commander of Havana. They were arrested when they came to the police station to complain against a Cuban whom they accused of stealing merchandise from Segal’s store.
Jewish organizations plan representations to the government and will seek tht release of Kurland and Segal. Eliezer Aronowsky and Chaim Cohen, the latter two American citizens, were arrested last week on similar charges and subsequently released.
Because of the martial law which obtains in Havana the arrests are regarded seriously.
There are 174,610 Jews in Palestine, according to the results of the Government census. About 166,000 declared Hebrew as their mother tongue. 4,600 gave Yiddish and the rest declared German, English, Persian and Russian as their languages.
