The Jewish Center, central Cuban Jewish organization, has been compelled to close its medical department which had been functioning for seven years, owing to financial straits.
A reduction in the subsidy previously granted by the Hias has brought about this curtailment in program, it is explained.
A special meeting of directors of the Center has been convoked by the president, Luis Jurick. A campaign for funds will be launched and unless the necessary sum is subscribed, the entire activities of the Center will be suspended at the end of this month, it is stated.
The Hias office in New York informed the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that it has been compelled to reduce the monthly subvention granted to the Havana Jewish Center from $500 to $325. The Hias, it was explained, has reduced all its subsidies owing to a decrease in its own income.
