Dr. David Alkalay, president of the Zionist Organization of Jugoslavia and active in communal affairs, died here today at the age of seventy-one.
Descended from a prominent Spanish family, Dr. Alkalay served on the executive of the Jewish Community for seventeen years.
He participated in the first Zionist Congress, being the only Serbian delegate. It is believed that he served as the prototype for Aladin in Theodor Herzl’s “Alt-Neuland.”
Dr. Alkalay served as a volunteer in the Balkan War against Turkey in 1885. He was the recipient of various decorations from the King.
