The first German Consul whom the Hitler government has expelled from office, Dr. Paul Schwarz, of New York, owes his expulsion in part to the fact that he had the temerity to entertain Professor and Mrs. Albert Einstein at tea in his private residence. Although Dr. Schwarz had expected the blow to fall, he made no effort to anticipate it by resigning. Following the receipt of the demand to get out, Dr. Schwarz gave out a statement in which he declared that he was a Republican and a liberal and denounced Hitler for the “bigoted policies” of his regime.
