Sir Edward Stern, well-known Jewish banker and social worker, died here yesterday at the age of seventy-eight. He was the head of the firm, Stern Bros., a son of the Viscount de Stern and a brother of the first Lord Wandworth. In politics he was a Unionist, belonging to the Chertsey Division of the Surrey County Unionist Association. He was president of the League of Mercy. In recognition of his public services he was created a Knight in 1904 and a Baronet in 1922, and he was also a Fellow of King’s College, London. For twenty years he served in the Yeomanry of Surrey.
