Close cooperation between American and European Jewish agencies for the relief of the Jews of Germany has been established, Dr. Jonah B. Wise, national fund-raising chairman of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, revealed yesterday. Dr. Wise returned Thursday after a trip to London, Paris and Berlin where he conferred with European relief officials and with leaders of German Jewry. A temporary fund of one million marks is being raised for German relief, he reported, of which 400,000 marks are being raised in Germany.
A committee representing the Jews of Germany, known as the Zentralausschluss fuer Hilfe und Aufbau, has been organized. Its members include Rabbi Dr. Baeck, of Berlin, Dr. Carl Mclchior, Director Stahl, Dr. Kreutzberger and Alfred Berger, Dr. Wise said.
Speaking of the Jews of Germany, Dr. Wise said:
“I can say very definitely that the situation for them is hopeless, and that the young people cannot possibly look forward to living in that country under present conditions, and so feel that they must resort to exile. Thousands of refugees are crowding into London, Paris, Brussels, Basle and Prague. I visited the relief centres there and saw some very pitiful sights. Men of the highest type of education and culture are frantically attempting to adjust themselves to new life in far away lands. Practically all careers are closed to them at the present time, and for the moment relief is the most important question.”
