Twenty-seven Jews, all Polish citizens went on trial in a Berlin court today on the charge of bribing policemen to secure residential permits. Two German police officials charged with accepting the bribes are also on trial.
The hearing is expected to last several days and the case is being given the widest publicity in the Nazi press. Newspapers are stressing what they term “Jewish corruption of German officials.”
A central figure in the case is Leo Weinberger, Berlin confectionery manufacturer, and a prominent Jew here. He is accused of having acted as an intermediary between the Jews who allegedly proffered the bribes and the policemen who accepted them.
