Einstein, Bernhard, Weiss Lose German Citizenship

Download PDF for this date

The German citizenship of Professor Albert Einstein, world-famed propounder of the theory of relativity, is withdrawn, according to an official communique issued tonight by the Prussian minister of the interior.

Professor Einstein, however, renounced the German citizenship conferred upon him some years ago, when he resigned from the Prussian Academy. He recently resumed his original Swiss citizenship and hence is not now a “staatenlose” or man without citizenship in any country.

Dr Georg Bernhard, famous German journalist, for many years editor of the Vossische Zeitung and now a refugee in Paris, has his citizenship withdrawn by the order and is now in the “staatenlose” classification.

Dr. Bernhard Weiss, former assistant police president of Berlin and ardent Nazi foe, also loses his citizenship by tonight’s order. Dr. Weiss escaped from Germany immediately on the advent of the Hitler regime to power. An order disbarring him as an attorney was issued recently.
