More than ten thousand dollars were collected for the relief of German Jews who are victims of Nazi persecution, last night, following an address delivered by Sir Herbert Samuel, eminent British statesman and former High Commissioner of Palestine. Sir Herbert addressed one of the largest Jewish gatherings in Toronto at the Royal York Hotel.
Deploring in strong language the Hitler menace in Germany, Sir Herbert substantiated the report made by Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, prominent Toronto religious leader, that conditions in Germany have a “terrible gravity.” Rabbi Eisendrath spoke of “Hitler’s inferno” and denounced the Nazi dictator.
Sir Herbert’s address was received with concentrated attention. He made it plain that the suffering in Germany surpasses reports which reach foreign ears.
“A report has just reached me confirming the terrible gravity of the Jewish situation in Germany,” he said. “The only salvation for German Jews is Palestine.”
An earnest appeal for financial support of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was made by Sir Herbert. He announced his intention of touring Canada and the United States to raise funds.
