Nations Council, Mr. McDonald issued the following statement:
“I have just received this morning from M. Joseph A. Avenal, secretary general of the League, a notice that I have been invited by the President of the Council of the League, to accept the position of high commissioner for the organization on an international basis of assistance for the refugees from Germany.
“At the moment I have no further statement to make.”
KNOWLEDGE OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
The experience of Mr. McDonald in foreign affairs is wide and varied. He has talked with national leaders in every country, and knows personally a considerable number of statesmen including Laval, Herriot, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-shek, Matsuoka, Masaryk, Venizelos, Mussolini, Ramsay MacDonald.
He was in Germany during the great national crisis, in Austria when civil war threatened, in Hungary when the Bethlen Ministry resigned and Karolyi became Premier and in England when the gold standard was abandoned.
In Germany he interviewed most of the present Reich leaders and attended Nazi mass meetings before the party succeeded in obtaining supreme power.
As president of the Foreign Policy Association which has a total membership of about 10.000, Mr. McDonald directs its policies and edits much of its printed material. In addition he is a well-known speaker on current world affairs.
He received his education at Indiana University and Harvard. He became assistant professor of history and political science at his alma mater and later taught history at Harvard and Radcliffe College. He has been chairman of the board of the Foreign Policy Association since 1919.
