“Hitlerism will pass-but will the things that brought it about pass?”
This was a question Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, of the Free Synagogue, directed at about eight hundred people who listened to his address on “Sixty Years in American Jewry” at services celebrating the six tieth anniversary of the 92nd Street Y.M.H.A. in the Theresa Kaufman auditorium, Lexington Avenue, and 92nd Street.
“The situation in Germany is the most tragical experience we have had in a thousand years,” said Dr. Wise. He bemoaned the fact that people who have attempted to obliterate their Judaism should be singled out as the martyrs for the cause of Judaism.
A. W. Binder directed the Jewish Choral Society in a rendition of “Hallelujah” from Beethoven’s “Engedi.” The selection was the finale of the oratorio, otherwise known as “David in Wilderness.” Rabbi Henry Rosenthal officiated.
