The German High Court today rescinded a fifty mark fine imposed by a lower court upon a former Jewish lawyer for displaying a sign “Rechtsanwalt Emeritus” (former lawyer). The Jewish attorney who had been dismissed under the Aryan clause displayed the sign and had stationery printed indicating that he was a former lawyer. When the Nazi Chamber of Lawyers “objected to his doing so, the police arested the lawyer, confiscated the stationery and hailed him before the court which fined him fifty marks.

In reversing the verdict of the lower court, following an appeal, the High Court stated that there was no German law forbidding former officials from advertising themselves as such. German lawyers are part of the stale machinery.
