Austrian Nazis continued their assaults on the Jews today by perpetrating a series of bomb outrages, not only in the provinces where, in scores of communities, the Jews have been living in a virtual state of siege, but in the capital as well.
At the same time, it was learned that the Austrian government has in preparation a series of measures restricting Jewish rights.
The headquarters of the Vienna. Jewish community and the buildings of the famed Schiff school were bombed by Nazis in Vienna today but the attacks caused little damage although occupants of both institutions were shakened and badly frightened.
Jewish stores throughout the city are being subjected to a continual barrage of small bombs, and tear-gas and ammonia missiles. Disorders were reported in all parts of the city today as the emboldened Austrian Hitlerites went after the Jews without restraint.
Cases were reported today where the auxiliary police commissioned to prevent disorders by the Nazis, joined hands with the anti-government forces in attacks on the helpless Jews. As a result, the authorities today assigned special detalls of trusted guards to watch the auxiliaries.
Belief that the Dollfuss government was preparing a series of anti-Semitic measures aimed to limit the civil and political rights of the Jews of Austria was strengthened today when M. Castellic, leader of the “Ostmaerkische Sturmscharen,” revealed that a review of all cases in which Jews obtained Austrian citizenship since the World War is now under way.
Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg, Minister of Justice in the Dollfuss cabinet, is the principal leader of the “sturmscharen.” a storm troop organization.
The census of naturalized Jews Castellic declared, is first to establish the number of Jews naturalized since the war and their proportion in public employment and the free professions, and the number of criminals among them.
“Our practical anti-Semitism today will do away with all these people,” Castellic declared, “but without rowdy and noisy accompaniment.”
