Axel Ehlert, president of the newly organized league of German-American Voters, in a statement explained that the league was in no sense anti-Semitic. “Just to prove it, the speaker at our next meeting, April 5, will be a prominent Jewish citizen,” he said.

Ehlert explained that “we have organized German-American citizens of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, primarily to instruct them in the workings of Federal, state and city government and secondarily to give them a voice in local political affairs.” The league represents 105 German-American societies, including some Jews, in its membership.
