High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope today signed a decree aiming to check real estate speculation and excessively high rentals.
According to the High Commissioner’s order the maximum rent per room in Palestine must not exceed thirteen dollars. Up to now landlords, particularly in Tel Aviv, where rooms are scarce, were demanding as high as twenty-five dollars rent per room.
Under the new ruling landlords will not be able to eject legally their tenants at the expiration of a lease unless the tenant has failed to pay rent or otherwise has broken the agreement.
The Palestine government announced that a commissioner will be appointed in the near future whose duty it will be to arbitrate between landlords and tenants.
