Although there is a strong anti-immigration sentiment now prevailing in Canada, the time will soon come when a large body of public opinion will come out in favor of unrestricted immigration as the only salvation of the country, declared S. W. Jacobs, Jewish deputy in the Canadian parliament, addressing the annual meeting of the Jewish Immigration Aid Society yesterday.
Mr. Jacobs expressed the belief that an open door policy will save the country from bankruptcy because Canada is now heavily in debt and the present population cannot bear the heavy burden. The increased population would also solve the problem of surplus wheat, he added, since it would be absorbed locally if the population is doubled.
Jacobs stressed the importance in the help offered new immigrants and refugees by the organization. An appeal for moral and financial support for the Jewish Immigration Aid Society was made by Lyon Cohen, well-known communal worker, and H. M. Caiserman, general secretary of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
