Carl Byoir, American publicity man of some international fame, receives approximately $65,000 yearly from Germany, presumably from the Department of Railroads, for commercial propaganda performed in the noted States, it is reported on excellent authority. Byoir is now in Europe.

Of this sum, George Sylvester Viereck receives $1,000 monthly, together with the expense of maintaining an office and office help in New York. Whether checks are transmitted through German government offices in New York or directly through the mails cannot be ascertained at present.

Carl Byoir and associates maintain offices in New York at 10 East Fortieth street. The offices are next door to and possibly adjoining those of George Sylvester Viereck, who has long been recognized as one of the most ardent defenders of Hitler’s Germany. Viereck has spoken in behalf of Hitler on a number of occasions from the public platform and has written in a number of magazines on the glories of the Third Reich.

Byoir was in charge of arrangements for the nation-wide celebration of President Roosevelt’s birthday anniversary this year, a fact which was regretted at the time by Congressman Samuel Dickstein, who stated that such prominence might later be utilized in the dissemination of Nazi propaganda.

A REALTOR, TO THE BARGAIN

During the World War Byoir was assistant to George Creel and later helped to swell the Florida real estate bubble for Henry L. Doherty.

Byoir’s greatest triumph came when a right-hand man to the former Cuban President Machado and editor of the Havana Post and Telegram, he succeeded in glossing over reports of seething revolution in the islands and disguised from the United States the true state of affairs there. The papers were owned by Machado. As Washington correspondent of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce he deluged the United States with a glorification of Cuba and its corrupt government.

It has been reported in some channels that Byoir has been represented at private sessions of the McCormack Congressional Committee to Investigate Nazi Propaganda by a business associate, Carl Dickey. It is understood that Dickey had appeared before a subcommittee together with ledgers from the office. This information would be neither substantiated nor denied by those associated with the committee.

Dickey has been extremely reticent about his associate’s affairs. He has frequently refused to discuss the nature of German publicity accounts managed by Byoir. An associate with Byoir at the time of his promotion of the presidential birthday party admitted that he handles accounts for German Railways and the German Tourist Association, which have recently incorporated glowing accounts of the new Nazi order in their advertising.
