Morris Greenhut, 22, received the Avery Hopwood award of $1,000 at the University of Michigan, where he is preparing for his doctorate. Although previously the major Hopwood awards have gone to poets, playwrights and novelists, the judges considered two of Greenhut’s essays of such excellence that they decided to honor an essayist this year.

Greenhut is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Greenhut. He was graduated from Northwestern High School in 1927.
