An impressive academic black-gowned procession of nearly two thousand students, trustees and faculty members of City College opened the commencement exercises last night at the Lewisohn Stadium. The huge procession started from the campus of the Main Building and wended its way to the stadium where ten thousand people witnessed the ceremonies.
A platform, with canopy, was erected in the center of the field where the graduates and speakers sat. President Frederick B. Robinson delivered the commencement address and Dr. Joseph Daniel McGoldrick, New York City Comptroller, administered the Ephebic Oath of loyalty. The college orchestras rendered several selections during the intermissions.
Harry Weinstein and Herman Redisch, of the graduating class, led the first division of the procession. Jewish students were very well represented among the recipients of the fifty-nine awards and the 1,856 degrees, diplomas, certificates and commissions.
“The most essential condition of happiness is freedom. But individuals must live together and work out methods whereby each may pu#sue his own happiness not only without interfering with others, but also by co-operating in matters of common interest,” Dr. Robinson declared in his address.
