Because Max J. Shapiro and Benjamin Shapiro, brothers, failed to get the opportunity for study thirty-five years ago, the Shapiro Foundation came into being this week. Papers of incorporation were filed with the Secretary of State in Trenton by David L. Cole, counsel, on Monday. The Foundation will give at least four young persons from Paterson and vicinity an opportunity to go to college without cost.
The Shapiro brothers are members of the firm of Shapiro Brothers Factors Corporation, 1441 Broadway, New York City.
Trustees named in the agreement signed with the brothers are: Philip Dimond, president of the Y.M.-Y.W.H.A.; Jacob Katz, president of Barnert Hospital; County Park Commissioner Herman Geller; Mrs. Edward Bloom; Harry S. Albert, executive director of the “Y,” and Abe J. Greene, city editor of the Paterson Evening News.
The reason why the Shapiro Foundation was started in Paterson is that the Shapiro brothers, although not living here, have made this city their “second home.” They have contributed generously to local organizations, mainly the Y.M.-Y.W.H.A. It is because of their numerous friends here that the two brothers have started the foundation, which obligates them for at least $500 a year for each student, who will be selected on the non-sectarian basis.
