An American Jew visiting in Berlin was slightly injured last night when a group of storm troopers attacked the Trianon, popular Jewish cafe in the Bayerischerplatz here in the first anti-Jewish disorder reported among the developments which began Saturday with Chancellor Hitler’s “housecleaning” of the opposition to his rule.
A special correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was notified by a high-ranking Nazi last night by telephone that a group of storm troopers were planning a raid on the Jewish cafe at 11:30 P. M. The correspondent immediately proceeded there to sound a warning arriving at 11:25 P. M., only to find the raid already in progress.
Sixteen S. A. men had arrived and while part of their number cowed the guests and employes of the cafe, the remainder set about smashing furniture and dishes. The two Americans present were A. G. Duker and Michael Shapiro.
Police were called immediately but arrived only after twenty minutes. They asked the S. A. men to accompany them and the raiders left with the police. They returned, however, fifteen minutes later, when the place had been closed.
