100 Die in Arab Clash

Casualties as the result of a Moslem attack on the Jewish quarter of this city, brought on by religious differences, mounted at a swift pace early today, with at least 100 persons listed as killed and 300 wounded here.

Additions to the toll were expected to be made shortly.

Martial law was declared last night as Senegalese troops attempted to restore normal conditions. A holocaust of killings occurred also at Hamma, Jammapes and Bizet.

Machine guns were mounted all over the Jewish section of Constantine. Soldiers patrolled the main arteries as military officers ordered all traffic to stop.

Part of the Jewish quarter was razed completely during the fighting.

Whole families were wiped out in sections, witnesses said.

The riots began last Saturday after a drunken Jewish soldier from a French Zouave regiment, Elie Califa, reportedly entered a Moslem mosque and uttered maledictions at the worshippers.

Stirred into a fury, the Arabs swept over to the Jewish quarter and began to burn and loot Jewish shops there.
