Salman Schocken, former German department store owner who has settled in Palestine, has established a Bialik prize of £300 per annum for Hebrew authors or poets writing compositions on Jewish thought or research. Originality and new contributions to Hebrew literature or language will be considered the main factors.

The announcement will be made annually on Tammuz twenty-one; the date of the death of Bialik. The gift is particularly appropriate, as Bialik had intended on his return to Palestine from Austria to help improve the difficult economic conditions of Hebrew authors and poets in the Holy Land.
