Recent anti-Jewish occurrences such as took place at Sianliai will not affect the favorable relationship existing between the Lithuanian government and its Jewish subjects, M. Vileishis, Lithuanian minister here, declared to a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
The Jews of Lithuania are deeply rooted, the minister said, and infrequent anti-Semitic attacks are not to be taken as indicative of prevailing conditions. The Sianliai incident was pure hooliganism and was recognized as such by the majority of the population, as may be seen from condemnatory statements issued by prominent Lithuanian and Jewish personages, M. Vileishis asserted.
He expressed great interest in the problem of mutual educational institutions for Lithuanian and Jewish children, friendship between whom should be fostered without depriving the Jews of their national, religious and cultural rights, he said.
