Yesterday’s national and local elections resulted in sharp defeat for the Integralists (Brazilian Fascists), who during the campaign carried on violent anti-Jewish agitation, early returns show.

The polling progressed quietly, although the Jews of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other provinces here feared attacks because of the Integralist propaganda.

Although complete returns will not be known for about three weeks, all indications are that Dr. Horacio Lafer, Jewish candidate for deputy on the Constitutional party ticket for Sao Paulo, has been elected. Dr. Lafer was a delegate to the Constituent Assembly which on July 16 adopted the new Brazilian constitution. In 1929 he represented Brazil at the League of Nations Assembly. He is about forty years old, was born in Brazil and is very active in Jewish affairs, although he does not officially represent the Jews as such in politics.
