Robert Moses, regular Republican candidate for governor, denied in the course of an interview with William Reswiek in The Day, that he had ever abandoned the Jewish faith or denied it.
“I have never denied my Jewish descent,” Mr. Moses said. “On my father’s side I am descended from Spanish Jews, while my mother came from Bavarian Jewish stock. My ancestors came to the United States more than 100 years ago.
“The truth is that, as far as I know, my family was never very religious in the accepted sense of the word. I was also brought up in the same atmosphere.
“Members of my family belong to the Ethical Culture group. My grandmother was one of the founders of the Ethical Culture Society and was associated with Dr. Felix Adler.”
Mr. Moses deplored the injection of racial and religious issues into the campaign and declared that the Nazis did not constitute a menace in the United States and would only become dangerous if driven underground.
