New War on Saar Jews

On the basis of documents forged by anti-Semites and circulated by Saar Nazis, Jews in the plebiscite area were subjected to a campaign of terrorism today. The anti-Jewish drive was in flagrant violation of the pact guaranteeing minority rights.

Jewish inhabitants were subjected to a virtual barrage of threats by word of mouth, letters, telephones and telegraph.

Saar Nazis also instituted a widespread boycott against the Jews, urging all Germans to abstain from buying in their shops.

The leaflets circulated by the Saar Nazi front contain alleged signatures of the most prominent Jews in the region to a document purporting to prove that the Jews alone are financing the status quo agitation in the Saar.

FORGERY DENOUNCED

The publication of these names, denounced as rank {SPAN}forgerie{/SPAN} by the alleged signatories, was pilloried by the union of Saar Jewish communities as “savoring of the methods of a pogrom list.” The union {SPAN}##dged{/SPAN} an emphatic protest with the Saar Commission of the League of Nations against circulation of the document.

Saar Jewry was in a state of panic as the flood of threats continued to pour in and the state of mind which makes for pogroms was created among the Nazis. The fact that the Nazis dared to go to such lengths on the eve of the plebiscite was regarded as an indication of what is in store for the Jews after the Nazis come into full power in the Saar.

Agitation for maintenance of the status quo is directed by a united front group of all opponents of Hitlerism, which includes all political #ements from Catholics, to Communist on the extreme left.
