The Canadian Jewish Congress, through its executive committee, was on record today with a protest against persecution of Catholics in Mexico.
A resolution adopted by the committee expressed “deep concern” at restrictions imposed by the Mexican government “upon the rights of the churches to carry on their work and the rights of individuals to practice religion according to their conscience.”
The resolution deplored that religious liberty should be placed in jeopardy “in the endeavor to bring about social and political reforms, many of which are otherwise desirable.”
“While refraining from discussion of the issues in the present controversies in Mexico,” the statement added, “we wish to give our moral support to all who labor for the freedom of worship and to express the anxiety with which we view every threat to liberty of conscience wherever assailed.”
