Itinerant Jewish merchants and salesmen seeking trade in the provinces are being harassed and maltreated by the gendarmerie, a number of the tradespeople reported here today.

Under pretext of enforcing the new licensing decrees, police are taking away licenses held by peddlers and salesmen and are confiscating their stocks of merchandise, according to protests made to the authorities.

Several cases were reported in which the victims had been insulted by police and told that “there are enough Christian merchants. We don’t want Jews.”
