An appeal for closer cooperation between church and synagogue was sounded in an address last night over radio station WEVD by Roger W. Straus, co-chairman of the National Conference of Jews and Christians.
Speaking under the auspices of the Bronx division of the Young People’s League of the United Synagogue of America, Mr. Straus declared that these two spiritual forces “must be more closely allied than ever before to fight the anti-religious pagan forces that are the main supporters of intolerance and inter-group hatreds.”
Warning that both Communism and Fascism attack “the fundamentals of religion as well as the basis of true democracy,” Mr. Straus said the “fate of democracy… is inextricably bound up with the cause of religion.”
Mr. Straus called attention to the Institute of Human Relations being sponsored by the National Conference of Jews and Christians and urged that as many as possible attend its sessions, which are scheduled for August at Williams College.
