A cable of gratitude was sent to Mr. Ussishkin for “his masterly step in the land redemption program.” Rabbi Goldstein emphasized that “if Zionist unity is impaired, the J.N.F. is the outstanding symbol of a united front.”
He pointed out that the J.N.F. is a standing reminder of how rampant speculation can be counteracted. “If the political horizon seems unpromising,” he said, “the J.N.F. can, if properly supported, anticipate future difficulties and restrictions by providing now a large land reserve.”
Rabbi Goldstein concluded by saying that prosperity without land is prosperity without foundation. He urged maximum support of American Jewry for the J.N.F.
REPORTS INCOME OF J.N.F.
Mendel N. Fisher, national campaign director, reviewing J.N.F. activities in America, reported that during the last twelve months its income was $262,392, representing an increase of more than fifty per cent over the income of the previous year.
Fisher praised the voluntary assistance given by many in the American provinces to help make the campaign successful.
Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, addressing the conference, said that while it is obvious that speculation can best be combatted by opening Transjordan, this course is beset with difficulties since the Palestine government still keeps Transjordan closed against Jewish settlement.
He declared that the J.N.F., if helped to acquire more land, can serve as a strong medium for breaking speculation before Transjordan is opened.
Morris Rothenberg, president of the Z.O.A., also addressed the conference. A resolution was adopted urging the American delegates to the Zionist Congress to exert their fullest influence to the end that measures be adopted “to assure J.N.F. priority in Zionist endeavors.”
