Bombarded with inquiries from newspaper correspondents, German officials failed today to issue a denial that mass deportation of Polish Jewish nationals has begun.
Newspapermen were later privately informed by officials, however, that “our relations with Poland are too friendly for us to indulge in mass expulsion of Polish citizens.”
In the face of these statements, there arrived in Berlin today a number of Polish Jews from Leipzig and other cities who complained that they had been ordered to leave the country.
Meanwhile, it was revealed today that energetic protests from the American consulate resulted in the rescinding by officials of an expulsion order against an American Jew, whose name was not disclosed, on the ground that he failed to pay required taxes to the Government some years ago.
