Rumanian Lawyers, Engineers Ask Ousting of Jews

A decision of the Bucharest Bar Council demanding disbarment of Jewish lawyers was forwarded to the Rumanian Government today with a list of the 1,540 Jewish attorneys in the capital. The Council, At a Meeting Saturday night, also petitioned the Ministries of Justice and Labor and the Chamber of Labor for replacement of Jewish lawyers with Christians.

The General Association of Rumanian Engineers submitted a petition to the Government asking complete “Romanization” of the engineering profession and dismissal of Jewish professors from posts at technical colleges.

The Workers’ Credit Institution, which is under jurisdiction of the Ministry of Labor, has decided to compile a census of all Rumanian workers to establish their ethnical origin and religion. It is learned that only Christians will have the right to benefit from credits granted by the institution.

Curierul Israelit, official organ of the Union of Jewish Communities published an appeal urging the Jewish population not to lose courage and to continue its activities in a spirit of loyalty to the Government. “Let us proclaim our firm decision to perform our civic duties,” the paper declares. “We are and shall remain faithful sons of Rumania.”

Elections scheduled by the Jewish Community for Jan. 16 have been cancelled in view of the present situation. The two principal component groups, headed respectively by Zigmund Birman and Alexander Solomon, have merged into one body with Mr. Birman as president and Mr. Solomon vice-president. Members of the Executive include I.L. Sternbach, S. Goldfarb, Dr. H.I. Vainer, P. Bronstein and I. Gardea.
