Premier Octavian Goga’s Government announced today its first expropriation of Jewish property, a measure forecast by Nationalist newspapers when the anti-Semitic leader took power on Dec. 28.
The official gazette published a decree ordering expropriation, “for purposes of public utility,” of several properties in Czernowitz and Bukowina belonging to Jewish institutions and private citizens.
The decree said the owners would be compensated for the loss of their property, which was transferred to the estate of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan. The property includes a house and five private buildings in Czernowitz, and a summer resort estate at Vatra Dornei belonging to the Jewish Religious Community of Wishnitz.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry circularized prefects of various districts asking for lists of firms which had closed down in recent weeks. It is understood the lists are required to enable Government action against Jews who halted business activities because of the Cabinet’s anti-Semitic policy.
The Committee for the Rumanization and Nationalization of Trade Unions sent a memorandum to the Labor Department requesting that only “pure-blooded Rumanians” be permitted in unions.
