Italy may recognize the proposed Arab and Jewish states in Palestine if a general agreement with Great Britain results from present negotiations, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today from a highly authoritative source.
Well-informed Rome circles express the opinion that owing to Italy’s desire to normalize relations with Britain regarding the general position in Europe, the problem of finding a satisfactory solution of the Palestine question is not Likely to encounter any insurmountable difficulties as far as Italy is concerned.
Therefore it is believed that within the limits of a general agreement affecting Italian policies in the Mediterranean and the red Sea, Italy is ready to recognize Britain’s particular interests in Palestine, provided Britain first shows herself ready to recognize Italian interests in Abyssinia.
In such case Italy will not bring forward any complaint against the proposed partition of Palestine as a violation of the Mediterranean status quo nor offer any opposition to the Liquidation of the League of Nations mandate over Palestine. If a general agreement is reached, it is confidently predicted that Italy will accept whatever decision Britain adopts regarding a solution of the Palestine situation.
