The Foreign Ministry has promised to intervene in behalf of the Jewish youths, Polish citizens, sentenced to death in Haifa, Palestine, by a military court on Friday for firing on an Arab bus. The Foreign Ministry’s aid was sought by Dr. I. Schechtman, head of the warsaw office of the new Zionist Organization, of which the condemned youths are adherents. They are abraham Shein, 20, and Shlomo Ben Joseph, 22.
Members of the N.Z.O. demonstrated before the British Embassy demanding release of the youths, and also establishment of a Jewish legion in Palestine. Police dispersed the demonstrators, arresting five of them. The Polish rabbinate cabled to Major General Robert H. Haining, General Officer in Command of British forces in Palestine, urging “in the name of the most sacred religious feelings,” that he commute the sentences.
