Eleven hundred communities throughout the United States and Canada have contributed $2,125,000 to date to the Joint Distribution Committee in the Spring phase of its 1938 national campaign for $5,100,000 to aid the distressed Jews of Eastern and Central Europe, it was announced by Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national campaign chairman. Isidor Coons, national campaign director, announced at the same time that more than $1,000,000 in cash had been received against the pledges of $2,125,000.
The communities participating in the Spring phase of the campaign held their local drives chiefly in the months of May and June and the total raised is expected to reach $2,500,000 by July 1. The Fall phase of the campaign will open late in August. In the detailed report on the progress of the national drive it was indicated by Mr. Coons that more than 50 cities, large and small, surpassed their established quotas in their local drives.
Vocational training and retraining has been provided for 23,230 German Jews preparatory to emigration and settlement in other lands in the five year period 1933 through 1937, according to a survey made public by the J.D.C., which contributed substantially to this training work as well as to the other activities conducted by the central organization of the Jews in Germany. The subventions of the J.D.C. for the training work during the five years totalled $545,300, of which $164,000 was contributed in 1937.
