Lithuania Repudiates Anti-semitic Attack; Will Suppress Incitement

The Government has repudiated an anti-Semitic article in the official organ Lietuvos Aidas, Jewish Leaders were authoritatively informed today, and has taken action to punish the editor responsible for it, prevent further such articles and suppress resulting anti-Jewish incidents.

The Government’s attitude toward the Jews has not been changed, it was stated, and there will be unpleasant consequences for the editor-in-chief of Lietuvos Aidas, who was author of the article. President Antona Smetona and Premier V. Mironas, it was learned from a high official, have strongly condemned the article and the Government has instructed the authorities to suppress anti-Jewish incidents and punish severely those responsible.

A Government declaration on relations between Lithuania and the Jews will be published in due course, it was stated. At the same time assurance was given that the official Elta News Agency would no longer publish biased dispatches from abroad and would adopt an impartial attitude on Jews. The censorship authorities have been instructed not to permit publication of articles agitating against the Jews. There have been no anti-Jewish incidents or cases of press incitement in the past two days.
