With $50,000,000 in American Jews’ investments affected by the political crisis, representatives of the 9,000 former inhabitants of the United States in Palestine banded today into an Association of American Jews to protect their interests.
Millions of dollars in American investments will be lost if the basis of the Jewish national home is undermined, speakers told the 200 delegates representing many American Jewish communities. American Jews came to Palestine, they said, relying on the United States Government’s endorsement of the Palestine mandate. They appealed to Washington for support.
The speakers emphasized that American Jewry had paved the way for settlement of other Jews in Palestine under the Balfour Declaration. They also pointed out that the Jewish Legion, which helped the British army conquer Palestine during the World War, included 6,000 American Jews.
Elias Ginsburg, formerly of New York, presided at the conference. Among those present were Julius Simon, president of the Palestine Economic Corporation; Rehavia Levin-Epstein, head of the Palestine bureau of the American Economic Committee for Palestine; Nathan D. Kaplan, Tel Aviv Municipal Councillor and former Chicago resident; Bernard Rosenblatt, former New York magistrate, and Harry Viteles.
