Laurence A. Steinhardt, Ambassador to Peru, has been named Ambassador to the U.S.S.R. Mr. Steinhardt, who is 46, was formerly Minister to Sweden, and before his entry into diplomatic service in 1933 he was a lawyer and economist, serving for some time in the Army. He has been prominent in Jewish activities.
