Robert J. Koshland of San Francisco was elected president of the Western States Region of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, which closed its fourth annual conference yesterday. Other officers are Milton Baruch, Los Angeles, and James L. White, Salt Lake City, vice-presidents; Leon Sloss Jr., San Francisco, treasurer, and Reuben B. Resnik, San Francisco, secretary.
The 500 Jewish communal leaders adopted a resolution pledging support to the United Jewish Appeal and other relief agencies and heard reports which stressed the importance of Jewish vocational guidance agencies and the advisability of combating anti Semitism as destructive of democracy, rather than as an attack on a minority group.
Melvyn Douglas, the screen actor, declared that the destitution of millions led to Fascism and anti Semitism and it was up to the Jews to help change these conditions. A similar position was taken in a speech by Harry L. Lurie, of New York, executive director of the council. Other guest speakers were Rabbi Barnett R. Brickner, of Cleveland, for the United Jewish Appeal, and Morris D. Waldman of the American Jewish Committee.
