Workman’s Circle Membership Totals 72,000, Baltimore Parley Told

The Workmen’s Circle gained 8,000 new members and 50 branches in the past two years, bringing its membership to 72,000, J. Fishman, organization committee chairman, reported today to the 39th annual convention of the Jewish fraternal organization. The convention, which opened on Sunday, is continuing to Friday.

President Roosevelt was hailed for his efforts to obtain a ten-year moratorium on war by 500 delegates and more than 2,000 guests attending the opening session at the Lyric Theater The audience rose in a tremendous ovation when the President’s peace efforts were discussed by Abraham Cahan, editor of the Jewish Daily Forward. Mr. Cahan also warned that the danger of Hitlerism and anti-Semitism threatened Jews throughout the world.

In a presidential message, J.Weinberg reported that the organization has more than. $7,000,000 on hand, distributed $100,000 in sick benefits last year and spends $500,000 annually for its schools throughout the country, as well as $250,000 a year for its sanatorium.
