The charge of racial discrimination was raised by the press today following publication of the edict empowering the High Commissioner, in accordance with the terms of the British White Paper on Palestine, to prohibit, restrict and regulate transfers of land in any part of the Holy Land.
The newspapers pointed out that the measure will oblige the Government to define the term Jew. Haaretz asserted that the Government had borrowed the racial theory from the Nazi regime, while the Palestine Post charged that the measure set aside the fundamental mandate provision of equality of the inhabitants before the law.
As published in the official Palestine Gazette, the measure specifies that the term land includes “water buildings, trees or any interest therein.” It also defines the term transfers to include “leases, mortgates, charges or other disposition.”
