An additional group of 150 candidates for the Sosua settlement in the Dominican Republic was selected here today. The selection was made by a committee composed of Elizabeth Rosenberg, daughter of James Rosenberg of New York, president of the Dominican Republic Settlement Association; Dr. Kurt Zuttman and S. Adler-Rudel, expert in vocational training.
The committee made the selections during a tour of internment camps on the mainland and the Isle of Man, interviewing refugees desirous of proceeding to Sosua. The list of candidates will be submitted for final selection to a committee headed by Sir Herbert Emerson, director of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees.
Two transports of refugees reemigrating from England already have departed for the Dominican Republic, totaling about 100.
The liquidation of internment camps on the mainland and the transfer of internees to more suitable quarters on the Isle of Man, announced in Commons recently, is proceeding rapidly, it was learned. Only a few hundred remain in the Huyton and York camps. At the same time the release of internees under the provisions of the White Paper is proceeding on a fairly large scale. It is estimated that the releases average 90 daily, mainly for health reasons.
