The 1941 national campaign of the Joint Distribution Committee for $11,250,000 will be launched Sunday at an emergency conference of leaders from all parts of the country which will be held at the Hotel Astor. The Greeter New York drive will start with a dinner at the Hotel Ritz Carlton on Saturday night.
The Sunday conference will be addressed by Governor Herbert H. Lehman, vice-chairman of the J.D.C.; Paul Baerwald, chairman, and Edward M. Warburg, co-chairman. The principal speakers of Saturday’s dinner include Miss Eve Curie, the scientist, and Morris C. Troper, JDC European chairman, who recently returned to New York.
Important announcements are expected at Sunday’s conference and decisions will be taken regarding the inauguration of the JDC campaigns in communities throughout the country. A message issued by the JDC in connection with the national conclave says:
“Millions of our fellow Jews abroad look to American Jewry as the only community in the world at present able to help rescue them from the tragic effects of the war and persecution. The conflict, which has already imposed great suffering upon civilians in war-racked areas, has had particularly cruel consequences for the Jews. As the problem increases the Joint Distribution Committee must intensify its work. The JDC just turn once more to the communities of America for understanding and financial support. The present meeting is called in order to prepare the ground for collaboration in a nationwide effort.”
