A Jew charged with acting as a recruiting agent for “a foreign power” has been shot at Nancy under sentence of a German military tribunal, it was reported from Paris today. The man, whose name was held secret, was said by the Nazis to be “an Israelite and former collaborator of Leon Blum,” Socialist ex-Premier of France.
Four youths alleged to have been enrolled by the “agent” were sentenced to death, but after intervention by Fernand Brinon, French Government delegate in the occupied zone; the Bishop of Nancy and the university authorities, the sentence was commuted to imprisonment. A number of other persons have been arrested in connection with the affair.
The French authorities in the occupied zone have issued a statement warning youths against enrolling in “foreign forces,” stating that this is not only punishable by the German courts, but by the French laws. In connection with increasing activity of “foreign recruiting agents,” Mediterranean ports are being watched with utmost strictness, it is stated.
