Lindbergh’s Nye’s Speeches Linked to Anti-semitic Conspiracy Led from Berlin

While the metropolitan press continued today to criticize Lindbergh and Senator Nye for injecting the Jewish issue into the discussions on war, a report from Washington stated that Lindbergh’s anti-Jewish outpourings are considered not accidental, but part of an organized conspiracy against American Jews “closely directed from Berlin.”

Declaring that Lindbergh and Nye “are playing with dynamite,” the World-Telegram today in an editorial stated: “We condemn Lindbergh and Nye for dragging out the racial issue and urge that all the rest of us refresh our memories as to what such an issue means when it really becomes hot. Let us all get out sand and shovel and smother this incendiary before it bursts fully into flame.”

The New York Daily News, an isolationist paper, commented editorially: “We think we’re being pushed into this war, all right, against the wishes of most of us. But we think Lindbergh is mistaken in saying the Jews are a major factor in pushing us in. Of course, the Jews hate Hitler’s guts. He began it by hating them and trying to destroy them, not only in Germany but in every country he conquered. They’d be less than human if they didn’t want Hitler rubbed out. But it is notorious that the South is the most war crazy part of the United States today. Without the Southern votes in Congress, Roosevelt could not have carried out his program thus far. Yet the influence of the Jews down South is almost negligible.”

“ORGANIZED CAMPAIGN OF INTIMIDATION AGAINST JEWS”

Writing from Washington, Michael Straight, in an article in the New Republic, reported: “The conviction is growing in Washington that an organized campaign of intimidation and terror has been undertaken in America against the Jews. It is believed that this campaign is closely directed from Berlin and that participating in it, whether conscious of its source or not, are both Father Coughlin and the America First Committee. Lindbergh’s outburst against the Jews at Des Moines on September 11and the simultaneous opening of hearings before the subcommittee of the Senate Inter-state Commerce Committee investigating the motion-picture industry are seen as part of this organized campaign. The basic structure of this anti-Semitic, pro-Nazi campaign is a chain of small newspapers and magazines which have sprung up throughout America and in particular in the Middle West. The articles used in these publications resemble closely those printed in foreign-language papers controlled directly by Adolf Hitler.”

“Il Progresso Italo-Americano,” largest Italian newspaper in the United States, joined the general press in New York in criticizing Lindbergh’s anti-Jewish allegations. An article under the signature of its publisher, Generoso Pope, said: “We add our voice to that of others who deplore the phrase Lindbergh unpatriotically used in his speech at Des Moines. There are amongst the Jews, as amongst the citizens of every other race, interventionists and non-interventionists. And all have the right to express their opinion, as has Lindbergh. But let us ban racial and religious intolerance which represents an atrocious offense against the spirit of the Constitution and a grave danger to our national unity.”

BROOKLYN JEWISH COMMUNITY ASKS LINDBERGH TO APOLOGIZE

The Brooklyn Jewish Community Council, representing the largest Jewish community in America, issued a statement today, protesting against Lindbergh and demanding that he admit “that he wronged the Jewish citizens of America, since no responsible Jew, who has a right to speak in the name of Jewry, has ever suggested any act that would bring America into the European war.” Jews, like all other Americans, are divided on this issue, the statement said, pointing out that “neither the American
