Today’s declaration of war against the United States by Germany and Italy brought forth immediate pledges of intensified cooperation and support from numerous Jewish organizations in the country.
The B’nai B’rith informed President Roosevelt that it “stands ready for any and all sacrifices of blood, money, talent and toil in defense of our country.” It was announced here today that B’nai B’rith has contributed $5,000 from its national funds to the American Red Cross’ $50,000,000 United States war relief fund for civilian aid and services to the armed forces. An additional $45,000 was pledged by B’nai B’rith units throughout the country.
Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America and Junior Hadassah, its youth group, informed President Roosevelt by wire that its 100,000 members have been asked to give “all-out aid to America” by registering en masse for local civilian defense work on Monday, December 22.
The Union of American Hebrew Congregations, comprising over three hundred congregations, pledged its full support in the present crisis. “We shall work and pray for victory, may God grant you health and strength to lead us forward,” its message to the President declared.
The Rabbinical Assembly of America also sent a message pledging the fullest measure of support.
