Details of the mistreatment of Jewish internees in the Breendonck concentration camp which the Nazis have established in Belgium as a “reprisal camp for Jews” are related in the illegal Belgian publication Lybre Belgique reaching here today.
The cruelty with which the Jews in this camp are treated reminds one of the times of the Spanish Inquisition, the paper reports. It publishes eye-witnesses’ stories telling how prisoners are often made to stand against a stony wall with their faces to the stone. Anyone of them who is unfortunate enough to make the slightest move, receives such a blow on the back of his head that his face smashes against the wall. One of the eye-witnesses saw a Jew in the camp so badly beaten that one eye hung out of the socket. He was nevertheless forced to do his work despite the fact that he was seriously injured.
